Surf’s up for Roxy Beach Body Workout

Roxy Beach Body Workout

What? An exercise class using circuit training and yoga moves — all based on the movements and fitness needed for surfing but without ever having to get wet. It’s designed to get your body in shape for the beach.

How hard was it? At the time it seemed fairly difficult but still quite a laugh. Running circles of the studio and dropping to the floor intermittently to pull a “sunbathing pose” barely felt like exercise, and more like a bizarre theatre workshop. Yet the next day showed me just how hard I had worked — because I could barely walk. Holding the “surfers pose” (basically, a very low squat) for long periods clearly took its toll.

Calories burned? Approximately 400-500 per 45-minute class — more if you work harder.

Ready for more? Definitely. Most of the moves were different from a standard circuit class, using equipment you may not have encountered before. It keeps things interesting, which means you don’t mind the pain of doing the exercises nearly so much. Clearly it’s nowhere near as much fun as surfing for real but it’s a good start. And seeing the ripped body of the pro-surfer who turned up to introduce us to the surfing poses would be inspiration and motivation enough for anyone.

What a great idea to get children active!

Fizzees (Physical Electronic Energisers) is a prototype project that enables young people to care for a ‘digital pet’ through their own physical actions. In order to nurture their digital pet, keep it healthy and grow, young people must themselves act in physically healthy ways.

Prototype project. Initial trials of Fizzees have shown that it has significant potential, and we are seeking partners to help us with further development.

Which are stomach are?

Your body is a machine. Imagine working for your stomach and having to break down what you consume. Remember liquids are included!

I spoke with two of my clients yesterday who told me what they ate for dinner; after the discussion I went home and thought this would be the perfect scenario to deliver in my life coaching/motivational seminars.

For this exercise to work, you must visualise actually carrying out the below; every exercise; imagine it being your job!

So. The question is which stomach would you work for?
Stomach A – This person had garlic bread, pizza, hot wings and a cocktail. Your job will be to break down the batter and oil before getting to the meat of the hot wings, a giant ball of dough (from pizza and garlic bread) with cheese the size of you! Remember; cheese is like glue and will stick to you whilst digesting, along with a liquid that contains a wide range of resistant chemicals.

Stomach B - This person had half a plate of salad with chicken, and a bottle of water. Your job will be to break down the chicken, salad and water into its natural form and take the nutrients.

So. Which stomach would you prefer to work for? As you think of which decision you are going to make, bare this in mind:

How much energy will you consume?
Will you replace/add more energy/nutrition?
How long will it take to do the job?
Will you be working consistently or will you have time for breaks?

These are all invaluable questions that we all may take for granted. Bear in mind that you are stressing yourself out to complete the assignment (break down the food) before preparing for the next batch. If you don’t finish the work it will linger and more will come (weight increase).

After all the work you’ve put in, what benefits will you receive from the food? After work how do you feel? Which stomach can you relate to more? Now think about your stomach, have you set consistent deadlines? Have you giving one stomach a 10 man job?

Now you have done this exercise, I hope you can see how much we take our bodies for granted; it’s important to remember that we need the right fuel…and a break!
